The short version: take the train if you can, and if you drive, park once in a deck and walk. Everything below is the practical detail behind that.
The Arlington Heights station sits right in the middle of the district — find it, along with all four parking decks, on the downtown map.
Metra's Union Pacific Northwest (UP-NW) line runs from Ogilvie Transportation Center in Chicago to the Arlington Heights station at 45 W Northwest Hwy — roughly 33 minutes.
The platform sits in the middle of the district, so you step off the train already downtown. Weekend service runs too; check the timetable before you plan a late night.
About 30 minutes from downtown Chicago outside of rush hour, via I-90 to Route 53, or straight out along Northwest Highway from the northwest suburbs.
Arlington Heights Road and Northwest Highway frame the district; the walkable core is Vail Avenue and Campbell Street.
Four public decks serve downtown: Vail Avenue (D), Evergreen Underground (U), North (G) and Municipal (M).
Blue-zone spaces are free — 4-hour limit between 5 a.m. and 6 p.m., then unlimited from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. on weekdays and all day on weekends. Yellow daily-fee spaces are $2 on weekday mornings.
There is no parking from 2 a.m. to 5 a.m. without a village permit, so don't leave the car overnight.
O'Hare International is the closest airport — roughly 20 to 30 minutes by car depending on traffic, which makes downtown Arlington Heights a workable base for a longer stay in the northwest suburbs.
Rideshare pickup downtown is straightforward, and the Metra station gives you a car-free route into the city for a day trip.
Two parks anchor the district, and both are a short walk from the restaurant blocks — useful when you have an hour to fill between lunch and a show.
7 S Vail Ave
The district's outdoor living room, right in the middle of the walkable core. Free Sounds of Summer concerts land here Thursday evenings from June through August, and Harmony Fest takes over the whole park in early October. Bring a folding chair.
307 N Dunton Ave
Two blocks north of the tracks, with a gazebo, formal gardens and open lawn. It hosts the Saturday farmers market crowd through the summer and lights up with more than 80,000 lights for the tree lighting in late November.
The questions people actually ask before their first visit.

Weekend service runs as well — check Metra's timetable for the last train back.
Mostly, yes. Four public decks serve downtown: Vail Avenue (D), Evergreen Avenue Underground (U), North (G) and Municipal (M). Blue-zone spaces are free with a 4-hour limit from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m., and free with no limit from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. on weekdays and all day on weekends. Yellow daily-fee spaces cost $2 on weekday mornings. No one may park from 2 a.m. to 5 a.m. without a village permit.
Arlington Alfresco is the district's outdoor dining season, running from early May through late September. Around 20 restaurants extend onto patios and sidewalk seating, and portions of the downtown streetscape turn into open-air dining. It started in 2020 and has become the signature warm-weather draw.
Metropolis Performing Arts Centre on Campbell Street stages plays, musicals and comedy, and Hey Nonny on South Vail hosts intimate live music most nights. In June through August, the free Sounds of Summer concerts run Thursday evenings from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in Harmony Park. Most restaurants in the core are within a three-block walk of all of it.
Yes. North School Park has a gazebo, gardens and open lawn two blocks north of the tracks, Harmony Park hosts free outdoor concerts and seasonal events, and the Arlington Heights Memorial Library on North Dunton Avenue is one of the busiest in Illinois with free wifi, restrooms and a cafe. The Historical Museum on West Fremont Street covers the town's 19th-century Dunton-era history.
The Arlington Heights Historical Society Farmers Market runs every Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon, May through October, on the grounds of the Arlington Heights Historical Museum at 110 W Fremont Street.
Harmony Fest and the Taste of Arlington Heights in early October is the district's biggest fall festival — two days of free live concerts in Harmony Park plus food from local restaurants and a kids' zone. The late-November tree lighting at North School Park, with more than 80,000 lights, ice carving and trolley rides, is the other big draw.
For generations now, people have been heading out to this part of the northwest suburbs. It all started with a tiny settlement called Dunton, but as the railroad tracks & commuter rail began to roll in, this little place started to shape itself into a proper downtown area - & thats still pretty much the same way we connect to Chicago today.
The area went by Dunton back in the 1830s, a small farming community where settlers put down roots, drawn by fertile land and a straight shot to Chicago.
The Illinois & Wisconsin Railroad showed up in 1854 and changed everything. Suddenly the area was connected to Chicago, and new businesses and residents followed the tracks in.
These days, the stretch around Campbell Street, Sigwalt Street, and Harmony Park is where the action is: venues, restaurants, nightlife, and a year-round energy that keeps people coming back.
If you're into the backstory, the Arlington Heights Historical Museum covers the deeper history, and the Arlington Heights Memorial Library is a community anchor worth a visit on its own.
Arlington Heights is a place where they really know who they are - & thats a big part of its charm. From the parks & rec programs, to the school rivalries, this community takes its identity dead serious. No surprise the area is just about the most popular place to live in the Chicago suburbs - people actually want to put down roots here, not just pass through.
High School District 214 runs the local high schools, with the likes of John Hersey, & Rolling Meadows High among the best known names around.
